Dr. Annie Wesley, Senior Program Specialist of the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada visited SEARCA in Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines on 27 April 2012 to meet with SEARCA Director, Dr. Gil C. Saguiguit, Jr. and the members of the Management Committee. The meeting provided the venue to orient Dr. Wesley about SEARCA’s various programs, projects, and activities. The meeting also discussed the IDRC-funded regional project on “Southeast Asian Uplands Agriculture Fellowships” implemented by SEARCA from 2012 to 2016.

The regional fellowship program for upland agriculture in Southeast Asia is a capacity-building project that aims “to strengthen knowledge and skills of professionals in agriculture and food security in the uplands of Southeast Asia who can be catalysts for developing sustainable programs in the uplands and who could assist in smallholder management in upland communities that are generally vulnerable to food insecurity.” The project components include masters’ degree scholarships for 33 qualified candidates from Cambodia, Lao PDR, and Vietnam; annual conference/workshops to deepen the understanding and facilitate innovative thinking on current issues and concerns of food security in the uplands of the three aforementioned countries; and publication of theses/research outputs.

The following SEARCA officials also attended the meeting with Dr. Wesley: Dr. Francisco F. Peñalba, Deputy Director, Dr. Mercedita A. Sombilla, Research and Development Department Manager, Dr. Bessie M. Burgos, Project Development Department Manager, Dr. Mariliza V. Ticsay, Knowledge Resources Unit Head, and Dr. Editha C.
